I have a pattern that I’ve noticed over the years.
Mainly ’cause a certain family member AND my ex,
repeatedly pointed this out to me.
I have a pattern of starting things and then not finishing them.
Not sticking with it.
Or giving up as soon as I suffer a setback.
Which yeah, that’s certainly been true.
ESPECIALLY as a kid.
I mean as kids and often as adults, we have “shiny object syndrome”
Something else comes along and takes our attention away from the thing we already have,
or are already doing.
And how the hell are we supposed to know what we like and don’t like,
are good at, or aren’t good at,
if we don’t dabble?!
Now the main thing I’m thinking about around me and quitting, is that as soon as there’s been an
excuse, re weight loss and fitness, I’ve given up!
As a kid I was always active.
Swimming 3 times a week.
Then as a young teenager, going to aerobics 3 times a week.
PLUS walking there and back.
Me and my mate also used to walk a few miles to the school in the next town and then run
a few laps around their running track (due to be demolished any time now 🙁 ) and I aslo
used to go jogging down the local canal, till everyone said I’d get murdered!!!!!
That put a stop to THAT.
I’m not a natural runner anyway!
Later it was a flirtation with the gym.
Wasn’t my favourite it has to be said.
But I did go for a while and definitely toned up.
I’ve always walked a lot too.
Walking to work and back, depending on which job I was at.
I’ve bought exercise contraptions galore and they all ended up being re-purposed as
Or door stops!
They WERE a fad.
But maybe one might have stuck.
You don’t know if you don’t give it a try do you?
And it was my money.
So so f****** what?!!
It’s only the last 10 years, sinse me and my hubby started our first business (upholstery
manufacturing biz) that I’ve really let everything slide.
more or less gone.
Swapped for takeaways and convinience foods.
For the most part.
I DID lose a ton of weight about 4 years ago now, by joining a slimming club online.
But as soon as the weight loss plateaued and there was a party to go to,
that was it.
I was having a drink and some buffet!
But then I was having a drink every weekend and allowing more junk back in.
Next thing I know, I’d put all but 9lb’s back on.
Lost 1.5 lb’s.
Put 1 lb back on and thought “screw this!!!”
I always knew it had to be a lifestyle.
But I thought THIS was something I couldn’t change.
Until just lately.
I’d been going on and on about how I want to change and then saw an ad online for a
You pay the fee and walk the miles.
And at the end of the month you prove your miles and then you get to receive a medal.
The frickin’ medal is a HUGE carrot for me!
I want that medal!!!
So until last Wednesday I was doing great.
I was well ahead and then I had a fall.
I currently have a fat knee and a fat ankle.
And it sucks!
I want to be outside.
Luckily, ’cause I was so far ahead, I only have 3 miles to go and 4 days to do it in.
I’ll just manage to do it hobbling about the house.
I was doing about 3 miles a day on average before I fell.
It’s anoying ’cause I want to be outside.
I’d gotten into a nice habit of walking once, twice and sometimes even 3 times a day.
I was loving it.
One of the first thoughts I had after my accident,
apart from “oh great.I broke my phone screen.
I’ll have to get that fixed at some point. Does my phone still work?
Thank f*** for that. It does”
was “now I’m probably gonna go back to normal.
I’ll probably not get my medal now and then I’ll just stop.
I mean, I’ll still go for walks.
But I just won’t push myself as much, ’cause there’s no reward.
And I ALWAYS quit”
But you know what?
THAT’S TOTAL B.S.
Firstly, I don’t always quit everything.
I certainly don’t have the numbers I want in my coaching business and I’m not about to quit THAT!
I LOVE my coaching business and would carry on if I only got clients every now and then.
I’d do it as a public service!
I’d do it as a hobby.
Whatever capacity I had to, I’d do.
It’s my passion and it’s something I’m also GREAT at.
And I don’t go around saying that about myself that often.
I mean, I’m great upholstery machinist, it’s just NOT what I’m called to do.
Also, I KNOW i won’t quit ’cause this IS me know.
I’ve enjoyed getting outside (even in the rain) and walking.
It’s been theraputic.
It’s given me confidence in my “stickability mucsle”
It’s started to make me feel a little lighter.
I don’t know if I AM any lighter.
I won’t get on the scales any more.
Why do that to yourself?
No I KNOW I’ll be back out there soon.
But I do have to heal.
So I’m just getting up and walking around the house with my phone in my hand, to finish up
with the last 3 miles!
I’m breaking my pattern.
In fact, I’m not accepting I had a pattern at all.
I mean like I said, everyone tries stuff and then decides it’s not for them.
Everyone knows “diets” don’t work (long term)
And fitness regimes you don’t actually like, don’t stick.
You have to find something you enjoy.
And that’s important for every area of your life,
INCLUDING YOUR BUSINESS AND HOW YOU MARKET YOURSELF.
If you REALLY don’t like writing blogs, then don’t say you’ll blog every day.
Or even at all.
Do the stuff you’ll actually stick with.
The stuff that’s fun for YOU.
If it’s fun you’ll want to do it all the time and if for some reason or another you can’t for a
bit, you’ll just KNOW you’ll be back at it as soon as possible.
Sometimes we have to do stuff we don’t want to.
But when we have our own business and when we KNOW that we can create our own
WHY WOULDN’T WE AIM TO MAKE 99% OF OUR DAY FUN?
WHY NOT DO THINGS OUR WAY?
Something to think about.
